As a partner at the Hammerschmidt Broughton Law Corporation in Fresno, California, Jeffrey T. Hammerschmidt concentrates his practice on a variety of criminal defense matters, representing clients throughout California who have been charged with felonies or misdemeanors including white collar crimes, driving under the influence, workers' compensation premium fraud and federal and state drug offenses. He also defends individuals who have been charged with murder and other violent crimes including assault and rape.
After graduating from Truman State University in 1983, Mr. Hammerschmidt attended the University of Missouri School of Law and was awarded his Juris Doctor in 1987. Admitted to practice in California, he is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Central Districts of California and the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Hammerschmidt has been certified as a specialist in criminal law by the Board of Legal Specialization of the State Bar of California.
Prior to starting his firm in 2005, Mr. Hammerschmidt spent more than a decade as deputy district attorney with the Fresno County District Attorney's Office, and this experience has given him a unique perspective in his criminal defense practice. He has also served as senior legal adviser to the Fresno Police Department and has shared his experiences in criminal practice with law students by serving as an adjunct professor in criminal law at San Joaquin College of Law. A member of The National Trial Lawyers: Top 100, Mr. Hammerschmidt has received an AV-Preeminent* rating from Martindale-Hubbell and a 10.0 "Superb" rating from Avvo.
Mr. Hammerschmidt is a member of several professional organizations, including the American and Fresno County Bar Associations, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the California DUI Lawyers Association. He has frequently appeared on legal reality television shows and is a contributing editor to a Continuing Education of the Bar treatise on criminal law.
In 2015, Mr. Hammerschmidt was appointed Chair of the California State Bar Criminal Law Advisory Commission. He was also named to the Northern California Super Lawyers Top 100 List for 2015 and 2016.
