Mark A. Broughton is a partner at Hammerschmidt Broughton Law Corporation in Fresno, California. Focusing his practice exclusively on criminal defense, he represents clients throughout California who have been charged with felonies and misdemeanors ranging from driving under the influence to white collar crimes, gang-related matters, drug offenses and murder. Throughout his career, Mr. Broughton has handled dozens of murder and manslaughter cases and currently serves on the special circumstances panel of attorneys appointed by the Superior Court of California, County of Fresno, to provide representation to indigent clients in homicide cases.
Mr. Broughton attended Western State University College of Law and was awarded his Juris Doctor in 1977. Admitted to practice in California, he is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of California and has been certified as a specialist in criminal law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. Prior to joining Hammerschmidt Broughton Law Corporation in 2010, Mr. Broughton spent nearly 15 years as a criminal defense attorney for an area firm providing representation for indigent defendants. His work with the Northern California Innocence Project helped attain the reversal of a murder conviction of a 17-year-old client. Often asked to share his experiences before groups of fellow professionals, Mr. Broughton also helps to mentor law students by leading classes on criminal trial practice and preparation at San Joaquin College of Law. The co-chair of the Criminal Law Section of the Fresno County Bar Association, he has also given back to his community through his active involvement with Leadership Fresno, a program sponsored by the Fresno Chamber of Commerce.
