Attorney Profile

Northern California Superlawyers Magazine featured Jean Hyams on the cover of its 2014 edition and published a full-length profile titled "Who Would Rosie Hire?".  That same year, Levy Vinick Burrell Hyams LLP was ranked in the Superlawyers Business Edition as the Top Employment Law Firm among small firms in California.

Ms. Hyams is a founding parther at Levy Vinick Burrell Hyams LLP.  Her practice encompasses employment discrimination, harassment and retaliation cases for people with disabilities, older workers, women, gays and lesbians, whistleblowers, injured workers, and people of color.  Ms. Hyams serves as a mediator of employment and disability access cases on a private basis and through the pro bono mediation panels of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California and Bar Association of San Francisco.

A leader in her field, Ms. Hyams is the Chair of the governing board of the California Employment Lawyers Association, the statewide organization of more than 1200 attorneys who represent employees in employment disputes.  She is frequently asked to teach trial skills and give presentations regarding litigation, employment law and other topics at continuing legal education seminars throughout California.  In recent years, this includes presentations before the National Employment Lawyers Association, National Association of College and University Attorneys, California State Bar Labor and Employment Section, California Employment Lawyers Association, California Applicant Attorneys Association, Bar Association of San Francisco, and Continuing Education of the Bar.

Prior founding Levy Vinick, she was a partner in the employment rights practice at Boxer & Gerson, LLP, the Bay Area's preeminent worker's compensation firm representing injured workers.  Ms. Hyams has also served as a Civil Rights Attorney with the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education, the federal agency charged with enforcing federal laws prohibiting discrimination in education. During her first nine years in practice, Ms. Hyams was a solo practitioner and then partner at the law firm of Hyams & Hall.

Before becoming an attorney, Ms. Hyams spent a number of interesting years in the high technology field, including her first job out of college as administrative assistant to Oracle Corporation's CEO, Larry Ellison, and later positions as a marketing communications manager at Oracle and Hewlett-Packard.

Ms. Hyams obtained her bachelor's degree from Wellesley College and is a graduate of Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley.
