James P. Roy is a senior partner and managing member of plaintiffs' personal injury firm Domengeaux Wright Roy Edwards & Colomb LLC in Lafayette, Louisiana. Focusing his practice on civil litigation, he represents plaintiffs throughout Louisiana in individual and class action matters involving vehicular accidents, admiralty and maritime law, personal injury and wrongful death. Mr. Roy has served as court-appointed plaintiffs' co-liaison and co-lead class counsel for the ongoing multi-district federal litigation concerning the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
A native of Louisiana, Mr. Roy obtained a Bachelor of Science from Louisiana State University in 1973. After receiving his Juris Doctor from Louisiana State University Law Center in 1976, he went on to obtain a Master of Laws from Georgetown University. Admitted to practice in Louisiana, Mr. Roy is also admitted before the all U.S. District Courts in Louisiana; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit; and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Highly regarded by his peers, Mr. Roy has received an AV-Preeminent* rating from Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in Best Lawyers in America in the fields of maritime law, personal injury litigation and mass tort class action litigation. Listed among the Top 100 Trial Lawyers in Louisiana by The National Trial Lawyers, he is a two-time recipient of the President's Award given by the Louisiana Association for Justice.
A Fellow and former board member of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (limited to 500 active members under age 70), Mr. Roy is an active participant in several other professional and civic organizations, including the Louisiana Association for Justice and the American Association for Justice, among other bar associations. Mr. Roy is also a fellow in the LSU Foundation's 1860 Society and is a former member of the Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State University (Chairman, 2008-2009).
