Rich Ruohonen practices exclusively in the area of personal injury, focusing on cases involving automobile collisions, traumatic brain injury, product liability, medical malpractice and other personal injury claims. Rich earned his B.A. from Hamline University and his J.D. cum laude (with honors) from the Hamline University School of Law. He is a member of the Board of Governors of Minnesota Association for Justice. He serves as Legislative Committee chair for that Organization and spends a considerable amount of time dealing with legislation that affect the right of consumers.  He is now on officers track for the organization and will be President in 2018.  He frequently speaks at legal seminars on personal injury matters.

Rich has tried numerous jury trials with signifciant success. In 2014 alone, he has tried a traumatic brain injury  case resulting in a verdict over $300,000 and a amputation case resulting in a vedict of over $2.3 million dollars.  Rich also tried a recent case where a young boy was sexually assaulted at a daycare and received a verdict of just over $6,000,000.  Rich is well-known for his success in and out of the courtroom and has become one of the most well know personal injury lawyers in the State of Minnesota.  Rich also is a frequent speaker at CLE's and currently serves on the Board of Directors and is on the officer track currently serving as Secretary for the Minnesota Association for Justice and will be President in the near future. 

Rich is also an accomplished national athlete in sport of the curling.  He had competed at the National and World Championshp level and narrowly missed qualifying for the 2014 Winter Olympics.  His team just finished 2nd in the U.S. National Championship in February 2017.  Rich is married to his wife Sherry and they have two children, Hannah and Nicholas.  Rich is also involved in coaching some of his children's many sporting activities.

  • Rich was selected as Minnesota Lawyers Attorneys of the Year in 2011 and in 2014 and was inducted into the Circle of Excellence as a multiple time winner of this award.  He was again selected just recently in 2016 and is one of the few attorneys ever to be selected for this honor on three or more occasions., Minnesota Lawyer, 2011
  • Rich was selected Member of the Year by the Minnesota Association of Justice in recognition of exceptional leadership and devoted service on beahalf of the Minnesota Association for Justice.  Rich served on the Board of Governors and worked tirelessly on numerous committees includiong the Continuing Legal Education and Legislative committees. Scholarly Lectures and Writings:

  • Rich has written a ground-breaking article on traumatic brain injury entitled "Debunking the Top 10 Myths of Traumatic Brain Injury: Effective Cross Examination of the Defense Neuropsychologist." The article was published in the Minnesota Association for Justice magazine, and Rich has rewritten the article for publication in the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association magazine. Verdicts and Settlements:

  •  J.K. v. New Horizons - This case involved a little boy who was sexually and physically abused while at a New Horizons Kid's Quest facility in Mille Lacs, Minnesota.  Rich and his partner Chuck Slane tried this case to a jury in Janaury 2015 and resulted in a $13.5 Million verdict.  The verdict was subsequently thrown out by a Hennepin County District Court Judge vy Bernhardson due to claimed passion and prejudice of the jury.  The case was tried again in November 2015 and this time resulted in a verdict of over $6 Million., 2015
  • Stulberg - Rich and partner Chuck Slane tried this case, which involved a 91-year old woman who lost her leg in a crash when she rearended a car in front of her after a mattress had fallen off of a car in traffic causing everyone to swerve.  Ms. Stulberg hit her brakes but ended up on the box spring of the mattress and slid into the car in front of her.  This verdict was for approximately $2.4 Million and there was only a $50,000.  The case continues in current litigation against American Family Insurance to collect the balance of the verdict., 2014

Other Outstanding Achievements:

  • Rich is an avid curler and won the 2008 U.S. National Curling Championships. He competed against curling teams from around the world in the World Curling Champioships in April 2008.  Rich has comepted in several different Olympic Trials and United States National Championships and has been in the final four teams on several occasions.  Rich has traveled the world curling in places like Japan and Germany and has competed all over the United States and Canada.

Educational Background:

  • Rich graduated from Spring Lake Park High School in 1989.  He then received his Bachelors of Arts degree from Hamline University in 1993.  Rich then went on to the Hamline University School of Law and received his law degree in 1996.  Rich is also a sought after speaker in his profession as a personal injury lawyer and gives numerous presentations in continuing legal education courses for many different organizations, including the Minnesota Association for Justice.
