John W. Tumelty is the founding partner of The Law Offices of John W. Tumelty in Marmora, New Jersey. With a practice focused on criminal defense, he represents clients in Marmora, Atlantic County and New Jersey statewide who have been charged with a crime. With more than 30 years of experience in criminal law, he has successfully defended clients accused of DUI, traffic offenses and property crimes as well as serious felonies such as murder, drug offenses, sex crimes, weapons offenses and more.
Educated at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he obtained a degree in accounting, Mr. Tumelty earned his law degree from Widener University Delaware School of Law in Wilmington, Delaware. He has been admitted to practice in Pennsylvania since 1983 and New Jersey since 1984. He is also certified as a criminal trial attorney by the Supreme Court of New Jersey, an honor that fewer than 2 percent of New Jersey legal professionals have earned.
Prior to founding his firm, Mr. Tumelty served as a prosecutor at both county and state levels, holding positions with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General Division of Criminal Justice. While serving in these positions, he prosecuted a wide variety of crimes including armed robbery, assault, drug crimes, white collar crimes and more.
Mr. Tumelty served on the New Jersey State Bar Association’s district ethics committee from 2004 to 2008. He also serves as a municipal court law attorney with the New Jersey Supreme Court.
