Joseph A. Bahgat serves clients all over the United States (and beyond) from his offices in the Greater New York City area, and also in Columbus, Ohio, which he shares with his father. Joe grew up playing several musical instruments, as well as football & baseball, but having worked in his father's law office since he learned how to type, he grew up wanting to be a trial lawyer. But law school was many years away, so Joe continued to play music, and then when he got to college he discovered jazz. Before graduating from college, Joe already had a working jazz trio/quartet that performed regularly in jazz clubs throughout NYC, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, and he was performing as a sideman all over the world with renowned artists like The Fins, The Four Tops, Tom Harrell, and Ray Charles.
For Joe, life as a professional musician living in NYC was full of reminders of all the legal issues faced by those in the entertainment industry, which eventually pushed him to finally fulfill his lifelong desire to become an attorney. Now, Joe works with entrepreneurs, small business owners, and creative professionals, helping them to recognize & protect their intellectual property interests, and minimize the myriad technology-related risks associated with operating a successful business today. Joe has unique insight gained from his combined experience in litigation and the entertainment industry, which he uses to guide his clients in areas of intellectual property litigation, media & entertainment law, Internet & privacy matters, and white-collar crime.
Joe excelled in his academic career, beginning in 1998 in New Brunswick at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2001 and went to earn a Master of Arts in 2004 at the Newark location. He continued his education at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, graduating in 2007. The New Jersey State Bar Association and the Ohio State Bar Association subsequently granted him admission as well as several U.S. district courts.
During his time at Rutgers, Joe earned high academic honors. He also graduated from law school with honors. The Rising Stars list recognized Joe as a top lawyer, among less than 2.5 percent of his peers within New Jersey in 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016. His published writings are in various editions of New Jersey Lawyer magazine.
Joe has served within the legal community in many capacities, including as a member of the #ABATECHSHOW Planning Board. He is an advocate of civil rights and social action, and supports causes related to arts and culture. Joe has also dedicated his time and service to disaster and humanitarian relief, and since 2012 served as a volunteer firefighter in one of the busiest fire districts in the state of New Jersey.
