The founding lawyer of Walther Family Law, Gretchen Walther understands the challenges that residents in the greater Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas of New Mexico face as they deal with separation and divorce. She seeks to help people resolve their differences as amicably as possible during divorce proceedings, specifically with regard to alimony, custody, child support, and asset division and evaluation. In addition, her practice includes family law appeals, prenuptial agreements, grandparents' rights and adoptions. As the co-founder and president of New Mexico Collaborative Practice Group, she and her associates work with clients to find alternative options to hostile divorces such as collaborative divorce and settlement facilitation.
After obtaining her law degree from Pace University School of Law, Ms. Walther began practicing family law. She was initially known for her aggressive negotiation and litigation tactics but began to look for alternatives to contentious divorce proceedings. After looking into options, she wrote a book for lawyers called "Power Imbalances in Divorce Mediation," which addresses the difficulties that can arise during mediated settlements.
Ms. Walther serves with several professional organizations, including as president of the Albuquerque Bar Association. She also works with the Second Judicial District Pro Se Challenge Project, an agency that helps individuals who do not have lawyers. She is currently the chair for the Albuquerque Practice Group Public Education Committee, which provides community education on collaborative divorce. She formerly served as the chairs of various organizations, such as the Family Law Section of the New Mexico Bar, the Family Law Continuing Legal Education Committee and the Annual New Mexico Family Law Institute.
As a respected member in the legal community, Ms. Walther teaches classes on the topic of divorce and has been requested as a speaker for the Law Education Institute Aspen Conference. Some of the decisions in her cases have been noted by federal courts.
