After graduating from Marquette University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in criminology, Mr. Govin earned his Juris Doctor from Marquette University Law School in 2003. He knew from the outset that he wanted to pursue a career in criminal defense. While in law school, Mr. Govin worked as an intern at Milwaukee County Circuit Court and the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, and practiced law during his last year in law school at the Milwaukee office of the Wisconsin State Public Defender. Today, he is admitted to practice law in Wisconsin and before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin.

  • Civil forfeiture case dismissed.  Successfully negotiated the return of client's vehicle that was seized during a drug investigation and had the civil forfeiture case dismissed.  Juneau Co. case no. 16-CV-115, 2017
  • Charges not issued.  Represented client in domestic violence investigation.  After criminal charges were referred to the District Attorney's Office, was able to convince the District Attorney's office of factual innocense of client and charges were not issued.  Milwaukee County District Attorney referral against SV, 2017
  • Felony referral charged as misdemeanor.  Police referred felony charges to the District Attorney's Office after raid of client's apartment revealed 3.5 pounds of cannabis, cocaine, and LSD.  Successful negotaited the issuance of one misdemeanor possession of THC charge and a fine only sentence with expunction.  Waukesha Co. case no. 16-CM-1922, 2017
  • Case Dismissed.  Successfully negotiated to the dismissal of client's drug case after extensive trial prep and convincing the District Attorney's Office of innocense of client.  Columbia Co. case no. 16-CM-334, 2017
  • OWI reduced to reckless driving.  Successfully negotiated the reduction of an OWI offense charged against client to a reckless driving.  City of Wauwatosa v. N.S., 2017
  • Not guilty verdict.  Achieved a not guilty verdict at trial for client accused of theft.  Village of Menomonee falls v. A.R., 2017
  • Case dismissed.  In a drug case, negotiated a deferred prosecution agreement for client and after client completed the agreement this case was dismissed.  Milwaukee Co. case no. 16-CM-3209, 2017
  • Felony reduced to misdemeanor.  Successfully negotiated the reduction of a felony narcotics drug charge to a misdemeanor offense after client's arrest at Alpine Valley Music Theater.  Client paid a fine only as his sentence.  Walworth Co. case no. 16-CM-437, 2016
  • Criminal drug charges reduced to civil forfeitures (tickets).  Clients were criminally charged with drug posseesion and negotiated for the reduction of the charges to non-criminal civil forfeiture offenses.  Washington Co. case numbers 15-CM-911 and 15-CM-912, 2016
  • Case dismissed.  After achieving an aquittal at trial for a client in a separate case the State moved to dismiss this case due to cross examination in the trial case showing the flawed nature of this case.  Milwaukee Co. case no. 15-CF-980 , 2016
  • Not Guilty verdicts in felony sexual assault trial.  Client was a Marquette University student accused of felony sexual assualt against a fellow student.  After extensive pretrial motion practice and a four day jury trial, the jury returned verdicts of not guilty on all counts.  Milwaukee Co. case no. 14-CF-3898., 2016
  • Felony Child Abuse case reduced to misdemeanor and straight probation.  Successfully negotiated felony child abuse case down to misdemeanor counts with straight probation as a sentence.  Waukesha County Case No. 15-CF-1314, 2016
