The founding partner at Gathings Law, Lloyd W. Gathings focuses his practice on complex civil litigation at both the individual and class action level. Based in Birmingham, Alabama, he represents clients throughout the greater metropolitan area. Admitted to practice in Alabama and Florida, Mr. Gathings is also admitted to practice before several federal trial and appellate courts, including the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Alabama, and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 11th Circuits.
Mr. Gathings provides advice and counsel for people who have been harmed as a result of the negligence of other parties. The types of cases that he has handled have included toxic torts, medical malpractice, truck and other motor vehicle crashes, workplace accidents, and defective products, and his background also includes business torts. Mr. Gathings has acted as lead or co-counsel in many trials that have resulted in negotiated settlements or jury awards greater than $1 million, and his colleagues have taken note of his successful track record and his superb ethics. Among the accolades that he has received are an AV Preeminent* peer-review rating through Martindale-Hubbell and an "Excellent" peer-review rating through Avvo.
Majoring in chemistry, Mr. Gathings attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a bachelor's degree in 1972. He then pursued his legal education at Samford University's Cumberland School of Law, and he served on the Cumberland Law Review before being awarded his Juris Doctor summa cum laude in 1976. Mr. Gathings is frequently asked to deliver presentations to groups of fellow attorneys on topics related to his practice area, and he has had several articles published. A member of the Alabama Association for Justice and other legal groups, he is active in several community organizations as well.
