Rhett Owens is a partner in the firm’s office in Birmingham, Alabama. His practice focuses on professional liability, including medical malpractice, elder care abuse and regulatory non-compliance cases, though he also has significant experience in business litigation, governmental liability, and construction and transportation-related matters. Rhett also has significant experience in estate planning and administration.
Rhett has served as both first and second chair in numerous jury trials, bench trials and arbitration actions, and has represented clients before state and federal courts in Alabama on a wide variety of pre-trial issues, including requests for temporary restraining orders and preliminary and permanent injunctive relief in cases alleging trade secret theft, employee raiding and the enforcement of non-competition agreements.
Rhett has been recognized as a Rising Star in the Birmingham Bar by B-Metro Magazine and has been named both an Alabama and Mid-South Super Lawyers Rising Star. Rhett has served since 2017 on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Society of Healthcare Risk Managers (ALASHRM) and served as ALASHRM’s President in 2019. Rhett is also a published author, having most recently authored an article in the Alabama Lawyer entitled “A Right to Refuse: The Legalities of a Pregnant Patient’s Refusal of Medical Treatment.”
Rhett received his Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in Political Science and English from Hampden-Sydney College.
Outside of his practice, Rhett enjoys spending time with his wife, Gunter, and their two children, Helen and Charlie. He and his family are active members of the Cathedral Church of the Advent, including its small group and homeless outreach programs.
