Attorney Profile

With a comprehensive litigation practice, Anne Marie Murphy represents people in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles, California. She is a principal at Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, LLP, where her caseload involves matters such as financial fraud, elder abuse law, whistleblower claims and class action lawsuits.

While many of her cases involve representation of local individuals, her litigation practice is far ranging and includes litigating against Major League Baseball over the Baseball Antitrust Exemption and representing taxpayers in a suit to stop Governor Schwarzenegger from selling major Californian historic properties and courthouses.

A longtime advocate of the elderly and the everyday consumer, Ms. Murphy has a number of successes to her name. For example, she obtained compensatory and punitive damages in a case in which a client experienced a violation of California’s Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. She has also secured millions of dollars in consumer class actions and elder abuse cases.

Ms. Murphy is recognized throughout the legal community as an attorney who gets results. For her accomplishments, she holds an Avvo “Superb” rating; a Martindale-Hubbell AV rating; she has been selected as a finalist for the Consumer Attorneys of California’s Consumer Attorney of the Year; and the Daily Journal has listed her as one of the top 100 women attorneys in California and one of the top 25 plaintiff lawyers in California. She is also a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America.

Taking leadership roles in a number of legal organizations, Ms. Murphy is also a member of the San Mateo County Bar Association, the American Association for Justice, the California Women Lawyers, the Consumer Attorneys of California and the San Mateo County Trial Lawyers Association. She also regularly appears on local and national media outlets and participates in speaking engagements to discuss consumer rights.

In 1994, Ms. Murphy received a Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College, going on to receive a Juris Doctor in 1998 from the Georgetown University Law Center.
