Jan Handzlik is an accomplished investigations and trial lawyer with a national and international practice. He represents individuals and companies in criminal investigations and prosecutions, complex civil litigation and regulatory investigations across the U.S. An experienced trial lawyer, Jan has tried well over 100 jury trials and numerous bench trials to verdict in the US Federal and State courts.

Jan is a nationally recognized authority on financial fraud investigations and prosecutions, regulatory offenses and transnational criminal investigations. These include civil and criminal securities fraud, money laundering, bank fraud, tax fraud, commercial bribery and public corruption, as well as bribery and “books and records” violations under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). He represents both U.S. and foreign individuals and companies in a broad range of investigations and prosecutions.

Earlier, Jan served as a federal prosecutor in the Major Fraud & Special Prosecutions Section of the United States Attorney’s Office Los Angeles. In that position, he worked closely with federal law enforcement agencies, conducted grand jury investigations and prosecuted fraud cases at trial and on appeal. In private practice, Jan was one of the first independent law compliance monitors appointed under the FCPA. For three years, he evaluated the operations of a Swiss multinational corporation, monitoring its compliance with a deferred prosecution agreement between the company the U.S. Department of Justice. Jan is also one of only a handful of US lawyers to have successfully defended a corporation and its CEO at trial in federal court in a major FCPA prosecution, U.S. v. Lindsey Manufacturing Company, et al.

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) honored Jan with its annual White Collar Criminal Defense Award. He was also honored by the Criminal Courts Bar Association of Los Angeles, which presented him with the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Memorial Award. For two years, Jan served as Chair of the American Bar Association’s National White Collar Crime Committee. He had previously served as Chair of the ABA’s West Coast White Collar Crime Committee for two years. Jan also served two-year terms as Vice Chair and then Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s Business Crime Committee. There he helped organize and present the IBA’s annual Transnational Crime Conference in São Paulo, Berlin and Panama. City, Panama. Jan is a graduate of the University of Southern California and UCLA School of Law, where he earned a juris doctor degree. He is admitted to practice before all U.S. District Courts in California and U.S. Courts of Appeal for the 2nd, 9th and District of Columbia Circuits; and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Pro bono/Community Service

  • Jan has been active in numerous public service and pro bono projects. He served as Deputy General Counsel to the Rampart Independent Review Panel for the investigation of police corruption and officer-involved shootings in the Los Angeles Police Department.  Subsequently, in another blue-ribbon investigation, he participated in an after-action assessment arising from LAPD’s Rampart Corruption Incident. Jan served on the Standing Committee on Attorney Discipline for the United States District Court in Los Angeles, and on a blue-ribbon, Los Angeles County Bar Association committee that evaluated operations of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Following the destructive civil disturbances resulting from the Rodney G. King police brutality case, Jan served as Deputy General Counsel to the Independent William Webster Commission.  The Commission, chaired by former FBI and CIA Director William E. Webster, evaluated the response of federal and state law enforcement agencies to the riots.  Jan also served as Counsel to the Christopher Commission on the Los Angeles Police Department, chaired by former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher.  The Christopher Commission evaluated issues of police brutality and racism in the LAPD, in the wake of the Rodney King beating incident and subsequent civil rights prosecutions.

Bar/Professional Activity

  • Mr. Handzlik is active in professional organizations and participates in public service projects on a regular basis.  He is vice chair of the International Bar Association's Business Crime Committee, frequently organizing and speaking at international criminal law conferences.  In June 2012, Mr. Handzlik co-chaired the IBA’s Transnational Crime Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he spoke on anti-corruption and anti-bribery enforcement matters.  In October 2012, he will co-chair and present as an advocate in a mock corruption trial to be conducted in the historic Four Courts in Dublin, Ireland, at the IBA annual meeting.Mr. Handzlik is an officer of the American Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section, which has over 21,000 members nationwide.  He recently served on the Section’s governing board for six years and now chairs a working group on the preservation of the attorney-client privilege.  Mr. Handzlik is past chair of the ABA's National White-Collar Crime Committee and served on the ABA president's Task Force on the Attorney-Client Privilege.  He was a member of the ABA Task Force on the Revision of Model Criminal Trial Practice Standards and working groups on the implementation of Anti-Terrorism and Money Laundering legislation and the Dodd-Frank Act.
