Joe Stevens

A partner at Patterson + Sheridan LLP in Campbell, California, Joe Stevens advises clients on a broad spectrum of intellectual property matters with a depth of insight grounded in both law and advanced technology. Drawing on an extensive engineering background, he brings a practical, technology-forward perspective to the development, protection and strategic management of intellectual property assets.

Mr. Stevens’ practice spans a wide range of industries and technologies, including clean and energy-related technologies, communications systems, consumer products, electronics and semiconductor technologies, medical devices and procedures, nanotechnology, optics, and advanced materials. He regularly counsels clients on patent preparation and prosecution, technology licensing and complex IP transactions, as well as litigation and dispute resolution involving sophisticated technical subject matter.

An accomplished inventor in his own right, Mr. Stevens holds 30 issued patents. Prior to entering the legal profession, he spent more than a decade working as an engineer in the high-tech sector. This first-hand experience enables him to fully appreciate the technical, commercial and legal challenges faced by inventors and innovators. He leverages this dual perspective to help clients strategically build, strengthen and maximize the value of their patent portfolios.

Mr. Stevens provides comprehensive, business-oriented IP counsel across the full lifecycle of innovation. His work includes conducting freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses, participating in patent review board meetings and advising on long-term portfolio development strategies. He also performs due diligence reviews of intellectual property assets in connection with corporate transactions and asset management initiatives, supports IP-related litigation efforts, and analyzes competitor portfolios to inform targeted patent filing and enforcement strategies.

An academic scholar, Mr. Stevens earned his Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University in 2004 and was admitted to The State Bar of California in 2006. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. In addition to his professional practice, he is committed to community service. He serves as the sole attorney on the board of regents for the California Institute of Medical Research.
