He earned certification in family law from the California Board of Legal Specialization in 1982, which he maintained for approximately 25 years before shifting his focus entirely to his current practice areas.

He is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and California Advocates For Nursing Home Reform.
