Justin began his career as a class action attorney, representing California consumers who were victimized by corporate price fixing. Justin then spent several years as an insurance defense attorney where he defended numerous personal injury matters to trial and became intimately familiar with the litigation tactics of the insurance industry. Since that time, Justin has dedicated 100 percent of his practice to representing injury victims and their families and has made his name obtaining great results for those who have suffered catastrophic injuries as a consequence of someone else’s negligence.

Justin attended Claremont McKenna College and the University of California, Hastings College of Law. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the San Bernardino County Bar Association, the Western San Bernardino County Bar Association, the Consumer Attorneys of California (Inland Empire), and the John Lewis King Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides legal scholarships to law students. - Herring v. City of Upland: I represented the family of decedent Jeriel Herring who, on October 12, 2017, ran in front of a semitruck and committed suicide. When the family first consulted me, I truly did not believe he had a case, but the family informed me that the Upland Police Department and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department were not allowing them to see the police report. The family told me that they just wanted to find out what had happened to their son and I agreed to look into it for them. What we discovered is that Jeriel had been arrested by the Upland Police Department at approximately 4:50 am the morning he died because he was outside his neighbor’s home holding his head and moaning, while looking up at the sky. The neighbors called the Upland Police. We obtained body camera footage from the investigating officer and the footage captured Jeriel telling the officers that he was a sinner and that it was his time to die. Upland Police Department arrested Jeriel and took him to the County jail. Records from the County jail revealed that the intake nurse would not accept Jeriel because he “was acting strange” and advised the Upland Police Department that they needed to get Jeriel evaluated at a local hospital before he could be admitted to the County jail. Instead of getting Jeriel evaluated, the Upland Police Department transported Jeriel from the jail, and released him out onto the street in the middle of darkness, a full 20 miles from his home. Approximately 10 minutes later, Jeriel ran in front of a truck committing suicide. This action was a Section 1983 lawsuit against the police department for violating Jeriel’s constitutional rights. Depositions revealed that what the Upland Police Department did was against their own Department’s policy. Plaintiffs’ psychiatry expert, an expert on suicide from UCLA, opined that suicide is, in fact, a time-sensitive thing and that if you get the person out of the 24-hour period in which they are contemplating suicide, it is likely that suicide can be avoided. This case was extremely rewarding as we were not only helping this family learn how their son died, but obtaining the family justice for how the police wrongfully dealt with him while in their custody. This case was resolved by way of mediation for $750,000. - Alechman v. City of Redlands: This case was a dangerous condition of public property case in which I represented the surviving spouse of a woman who died in a single-car accident in the City of Redlands. She was driving along a country road that goes through some old citrus farms. The road is a straightaway road until it approaches an old weir box in the ground that has not been used for decades. The exposed part of the weir box consists of about 2 feet of cinder block protruding out of the ground in a square shape. The road was constructed such that it proceeds straight toward the weir box, and then veers left around the box, and then veers back right to continue going straight. The weir box was located just two feet to the right of the fog line of the lane of travel. Our client’s wife’s vehicle went over the fog line, her tire struck the weir box, her vehicle rolled multiple times, and she died. The crux of the case focused on the “clear zone” concept and how public entities, when designing roads, are required to have a clear area on each side of the roadway for vehicles who veer off of the roadway to recover or come to a safe stop. The City did not in fact own the weir box, so the case dealt also with the extent to which public property can be made dangerous by dangerous conditions on adjacent privately owned property. After an approximately two-week trial, the jury held the City of Redlands 60% at fault for the collision and returned a verdict for our client in the amount of $2 million. The most rewarding part of this case was that, just over a week after our verdict, the City removed the weir box. , 2019
- Justin King finalized a $3.2 million settlement with California State University, San Bernardino in a personal injury car accident case involving a university police officer who was a distracted driver. Before the accident, the woman was highly active and loved the outdoors and hiking. She was also a loving grandmother who played with her grandchildren and volunteered at her local YMCA. However, the fallout from the injuries she suffered caused her to be bed-ridden and in need of serious medical assistance for months. She was driving her car along the 210 freeway on her way to a work-training that was being put on by the County of San Bernardino. A Cal State officer was driving behind her when he struck her vehicle from behind, sending her crashing into the car in front of her, across several lanes of traffic and then down into a ravine on the south side of the 210 freeway. She ultimately wound up hitting a tree in the ravine. Although she was lucky to escape with her life, the woman and her family were appalled when they learned why the accident occurred. A truck driver testified that the officer was looking down at his cell phone shortly before the crash. The officer was on his way to work at Cal State San Bernardino and was in full dress uniform, driving an unmarked police vehicle owned by the California State University Police. , 2020
