David M. Kohn

As founding partner of Lewis Kohn & Walker LLP, David M. Kohn is committed to representing clients in San Diego, California. He focuses his practice on intellectual property and patent law.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Riverside, Mr. Kohn worked for a bioscience company in its pharmacology department for six years. During that time, he worked with small molecules and gained an understanding of lab environments, the importance of research and the need to protect that research. He went on to earn a Juris Doctor from California Western School of Law, where he was a member of the Student Intellectual Property Law Association.

Early in his legal career, Mr. Kohn worked as a patent agent and these experiences gave him valuable knowledge and insight which he now uses to benefit his clients. He offers counsel on licensing strategies, early stage regulatory issues, property protection and licensing negotiations; he drafts clearance/freedom to operate opinions; he litigates on the behalf of clients when someone infringes upon their assets through a breach of contract or other illegal actions; and he successfully prosecutes patents for items involving cancer therapies, protein therapeutics, autoimmune therapies, pump and valve systems, emulsion-based formulations and photon generation devices.

Using his background in medical science, Mr. Kohn works with clients, including academic and corporate institutions, in the medical device, technology and pharmaceutical industries. He understands the high demands associated with research and that protecting a company’s intellectual property is an important part of ensuring success and viability. Active in the legal community, Mr. Kohn holds memberships with the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the San Diego County Bar Association.
