Marcus Bourassa is a trial attorney at McKenzie Scott PC in San Diego, California, where his practice spans criminal defense, police misconduct, jail injury, white collar crimes, money laundering, civil rights, federal criminal defense, honest services fraud defense, insurance fraud and border arrests. He also represents injured clients in car and truck accidents, wrongful death, catastrophic injury and traumatic brain injury, premises liability, motorcycle and bicycle accidents, pedestrian accidents, product liability and workplace accidents. Colleagues and clients alike recognize his tireless commitment to advocating for the little guy.
Mr. Bourassa's path to the law began with military service. Between his studies at Stanford University, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees, he served as an intelligence officer in the United States Marine Corps. He deployed to Afghanistan and led a team of professional interrogators and confidential sources. He later returned to Stanford Law School and received his Juris Doctor in 2016. There he became a regional mock trial champion, was elected student president and received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Service, along with top honors in criminal law, administrative law and contract law.
During law school, Mr. Bourassa externed in state and federal prosecutors' offices and performed pro bono work for low-income tenants. He also helped win relief for a man facing a sentence of 25-to-life for a nonviolent drug offense. After graduating, he clerked for the Honorable Christina A. Snyder of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He then joined the Federal Public Defender's office in San Diego, where he spent three years trying numerous cases to verdict, arguing before the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit and securing dismissals in many federal felony cases. His work drew national attention when the first "zero tolerance" case to go to trial ended poorly for the government.
Born in Texas and raised in New Mexico, Mr. Bourassa is admitted to practice in California state courts, the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Central and Northern Districts of California, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.
