Verdicts / Settlements (Case Results)

  • 1,500,000 Settlement approved in minor's comp on behalf of Jane Doe in Jane Doe v Simi Valley School District.  The case, Doe, et al. v. Simi Valley Unified School District, et al., Ventura County Superior Court Case No. 56-2020-00539520-CU-PO-VTA What Happened: A School District That Knew the Danger and Did Nothing On February 7, 2019, Jane Doe — a seven-year-old girl diagnosed with severe autism at age three — was riding home on a special needs school bus operated by SVUSD. During the ride, an older male student who had been assigned to the bus by school Principal Jennifer Goldman moved Jane Doe from her seat to isolate her, then subjected her to a prolonged sexual assault that lasted nearly ten minutes. The attack was recorded on the bus's onboard camera. Discovery revealed that Principal Goldman had placed the male student on the special needs bus specifically because he posed a physical danger to others and required constant, direct supervision. His school records documented a history of violent and sexually inappropriate behavior — including prior incidents of unwanted touching of female students — and his records from a previous Texas school district indicated he had not been permitted to ride buses there. Despite all of this, when Goldman assigned a substitute paraeducator as bus monitor on the day of the assault, she gave that monitor no information about the male student's history, no training, and no warning of any kind. The substitute monitor — who had never before served in a bus monitoring role — sat in the front of the bus chatting with the driver while the assault occurred just a few seats behind her over the course of nearly ten minutes. By the time she noticed Jane Doe was no longer in her seat, the assault was already complete. Despite separating the two children, the monitor left them on the same bus for the remainder of the ride., 2026
  • 16 million dollar verdict against the Beverly Hills Unified School District  The case, LAUREN SIEGMAN, an individual, Plaintiff, vs. HENRY FRIEDMAN; BEVERLY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL; BEVERLY HILLS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, et al., Case No. 20SMCV00867, was tried in the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Los Angeles. The jury returned its verdict on November 26, 2025. The jury found that BHUSD was negligent in its supervision and retention of Friedman and that the District's failures were a substantial factor in causing the survivor's lifelong emotional harm. The entire $16 million verdict was for noneconomic damages, compensating for decades of emotional pain, psychological trauma, and loss of enjoyment of life. The case had previously ended in a mistrial before the plaintiff retained trial lawyer David Gammill of Gammill Law Accident & Injury Lawyers as lead counsel for the retrial., 2025
  • 21 million dollar verdict in wrongful death case as lead trial counsel. https://juryverdictalert.com/wrongful-death/decedent-crashes-into-collapsed-crash-cushion Facts and Background Facts and Background: Plaintiff's 33-year-old decedent, after watching a friend's band play, drove on the 134 Freeway from  a venue in Pasadena to Burbank. It was around 2 a.m. on a Sunday morning and raining when he lost control of the vehicle. As he departed the roadway, his vehicle impacted an already fully collapsed crash cushion (SCI100GM). Decedent Walsh died on impact. Blood drawn 19 days after his death had a BAC of .082. Plaintiff's Contentions: Plaintiffs contended that Caltrans permitted a dangerous condition to exist on the 134 freeway causing Decedent’s death. Also, that plaintiff lost control of his car for unknown reasons, and collided into a completely collapsed crash cushion. The crash cushion decedent impacted had been previously impacted on February 18, 2016 and should have been discovered and reset by Caltrans within their own one-week standard. That had the crash cushion been reset, it would have prevented decedent's death. Defendant's Contentions: Defendant State contended that no records or eyewitnesses indicated the crash cushion was impacted and fully compacted before the subject accident of March 6, 2016. Defendant’s expert on traffic engineering and maintenance used a Google Street View photograph for an exhibit to show the general layout of the roadway, created in 2019. The exhibit mistakenly had the wrong date of creation, but Defendant argued that it was not offered as an exhibit of the condition of the roadway at any specific time. Evidence at trial indicated the decedent was traveling at a speed too fast for the wet conditions of the roadway, had drunk multiple beers within two hours prior to the subject accident, and smelled of alcohol at the crash scene.    No witnesses testified to ever having seen the crash cushion collapsed prior to the subject accident of March 6, 2016. They offered referring counsel 10k before trial. , 2021
