Joseph Carter Maher

Joseph Carter Maher is the founding attorney of Maher & Maher Law, PC, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he is dedicated to defending individuals facing DUI charges and other serious criminal allegations. Recognized by his peers as one of the region’s leading DUI defense attorneys, Mr. Maher provides strong, strategic representation to clients navigating some of the most challenging moments of their lives. His approach combines deep legal knowledge, trial-tested advocacy and a commitment to protecting his clients’ constitutional rights.

Before launching his defense practice, Mr. Maher served as a prosecutor in El Paso County, Colorado, for five years, where he trained deputy district attorneys handling DUI cases and was part of the Vehicular Homicide team. This experience gave him rare insight into how cases are built and prosecuted – knowledge he now uses to anticipate the state’s strategies and craft effective defenses for his clients. Over the course of his career, he has tried more than 70 jury trials to verdict, sharpening the courtroom skills that set him apart.

Mr. Maher has also completed advanced, law-enforcement-level training in DUI detection and evidence, including the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) instructor development course and the advanced roadside impaired driving enforcement course (ARIDE).  Mr. Maher is one of only four lawyers in the state of Colorado to earn the ACS-CHAL Forensic Lawyer Scientist designation.  His advanced training in gas chromatography - the blood alcohol testing method used in Colorado - give him significant technical edge in challenging the accuracy of DUI forensic testing evidence.

A former Marine officer, Mr. Maher achieved the rank of Captain and led Marines through three deployments to Iraq, earning the Marine Corps Association’s Chambers Award for leadership. He also served as a deputy legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel, focusing on military and veterans’ issues.
