Eric J. Hobbs

A partner at Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. in Denver, Colorado, Mr. Hobbs focuses his practice on high-stakes litigation and trials, leveraging the strength of one of the largest and most preeminent litigation firms in the country to deliver wins to his clients involved in complex civil disputes throughout the United States. Mr. Hobbs frequently represents companies as plaintiffs seeking affirmative recovery against other businesses, often on contingent, mixed, or alternative fee arrangements that better align client and lawyer incentives to maximize efficiencies and case outcomes. In recent years, he has helped clients large and small achieve hundreds of millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements.

Additionally, Mr. Hobbs regularly defends companies when their business, reputation, or products are on the line. He has achieved wins for defendants at all stages, from pre-suit negotiation, to early dispositive motion practice, to summary judgment, trial and appeal.

As both plaintiffs and defendants, Mr. Hobbs often engages with clients on one-off disputes that require quickly grasping new technologies, complex legal issues, and complicated facts. He has worked to resolve conflicts in various industries, including the information technology, health care, medical device, home automation, finance/lending and automotive sectors, among many others. 

Mr. Hobbs has spent his entire career at Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P., one of the top trial firms in the United States for complex civil litigation with a deep bench of over 500 litigation and trial attorneys. Shook is nationally-recognized for its experience defending mass torts, class action, and product liability cases, as well as handling other complex business and intellectual property matters on both sides of the "v." The firm counts as clients some of the best known brands in the world, including nearly three-quarters of the Fortune 100, and is regularly recognized as a top firm for client service and a "powerhouse" for litigation. 

In order to provide the most comprehensive representation to its clients, Shook maintains a stable of non-attorney subject matter experts for a variety of issues, boasts an in-house creative services department to assist with creating visual aids and trial demonstratives, and hosts a robust e-discovery group to handle complicated ESI collection and processing. A longtime resident of Denver, Colorado also with deep roots in Kansas City, Missouri, Mr. Hobbs is licensed to practice law in Colorado and Missouri, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. In addition, he regularly appears in other courts throughout the country utilizing the pro hac vice admission process by associating with attorneys in Shook's 18 U.S. offices and other local firms, where necessary. 

Prior to joining Shook, Mr. Hobbs clerked in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado, the Denver District Attorney's Office, and the Missouri Attorney General's Office. He earned his J.D. (2012) from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where he graduated in the top 2% of his class and competed on the school’s top-ranked national trial and appellate advocacy teams. He received his B.A. (2009), summa cum laude, from the University of Missouri, where he was a member of the Honors College. He received academic merit scholarships to attend both schools. 

Mr. Hobbs has served on the Board of Directors for JDRF (formerly, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) - Mountain West Chapter. He serves on the Board of Governors for the Colorado Bar Association and is actively involved with the Doyle Inn of Court in Denver. He is an Eagle Scout.

Outside of the office, Mr. Hobbs is an avid skier, hiker, and mountain biker. He and his wife share three kids.
