John Schmitz practices business law including corporate governance, shareholder disputes, intellectual property, general counsel, divestitures and mergers and acquisitions. Born and raised in Colorado, he is licensed in both in Colorado (2006) and California (2005).
Mr. Schmitz is a dual trained attorney - meaning he practices business law, as well as litigates necessary business matters. It is a rare find that an attorney can both address business issues and litigate. Mr. Schmitz can guide you through the length of the transaction and/or the dispute. He provides you a completed product from development of your legal positions, managing legal matters through completion including any necessary litigation.
With a finance degree, experience as a financial analyst for a major bank, and serving as a chief financial officer, he has an intimate knowledge of financial issues. He understands the effect of actions on balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow. Mr. Schmitz can guide you through difficult business decisions with due regard to the legal, regulatory, and financial considerations.
During a client’s engagement he is in constant contact, responsive to their issues and questions. He develops and explains options and then expertly executes the client’s decision. Before any litigation, he is a savvy negotiator who minimizes his client’s time and money spent on legal issues.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Schmitz has successfully concluded numerous transactions including divestitures, mergers and acquisitions and legal opinions. These transactions total more than a half of a billion dollars on the equity side and around two billion dollars in gross sales.
A member of the Colorado Bar Association, Mr. Schmitz is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California as well as the state courts of Colorado and California. Mr. Schmitz has worked on transactions and litigation throughout five different continents.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in finance from the University of Colorado Boulder, Mr. Schmitz received a Juris Doctor from New EnglandLaw | Boston in 2005. Mr. Schmitz clerked for Chief Federal Magistrate Judge Marianne B. Bowler in the 1st Circuit.
Outside his practice, Mr. Schmitz enjoys art history, rowing, and downhill skiing.
