Laurie Schmidt is the founding and managing attorney at 5280 Law Group in Denver, Colorado. Her practice area is focused on family law and criminal defense. She helps people navigate everything from divorce and parenting disputes to criminal charges involving assault, domestic violence, theft, and drug related cases.
Laurie built her firm around what matters most - listening to her clients and truly hearing their stories. Instead of dwelling on past problems, she focuses on helping people grow and move forward. Her approach is straightforward: get the best results for her clients while avoiding unnecessary battles that could make things worse. Her extensive litigation experience means that if resolution is not possible, she can provide competent and professional representation in court.
Laurie’s path to law was pretty interesting as she first obtained her undergraduate degree in financing from the University of Nebraska and worked in the financial industry for a few years before obtaining her law degree from Whittier College of Law in 2006, where she graduated magna cum laude. Since, Laurie has obtained certificates from several prestigious institutes, including the National College of DUI defense and the National Family Law Trial Institute. Her experience in the financial industry has proven invaluable in representing clients in high or complicated asset divorces.
Licensed to practice law in California (on inactive status by choice) (2007) and Colorado (2012), Laurie's career path included serving as a deputy district attorney in Riverside County, California. She credits this role with honing her trial advocacy skills, allowing her to skillfully dissect cases, weaving in compelling narratives and adeptly handle evidentiary matters.
Laurie prefers to stay active in the legal community and participates in the Colorado Bar Association and its Family Law Division, the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar and the Inns of Court. She has spoken on topics including vital changes in the laws, legal ethics, and impact of substance use or abuse in parenting matters.
Some of Laurie's accolades include a "Superb" rating on Avvo, recognition as one of the DUI/DWI 10 Best by the American Institute of DUI/DWI Attorneys and a spot among the Top 40 Lawyers Under 40 by the American Society of Legal Advocates.
