The founder of the Colorado Family Law Project, Maha Kamal focuses her practice exclusively on that area of the law. Based in Denver, Colorado, she provides compassionate representation to clients throughout the state. Her book, Colorado Family Law: A Trail Guide will be available mid-June for the public and practitioner's alike. She also saw through Colorado's Licensed Legal Professionals (LLP) program from its start in 2020 to the inaugural class being sworn in on June 20, 2024. She is also co-chair of the first all-day LLP CLE Practicum following the June 2024 inauguration.
Born and raised in Colorado, Ms. Kamal attended the University of Colorado Boulder as an undergraduate, and she majored in international affairs and received a Bachelor of Arts in 2006. She subsequently went on to pursue her legal studies at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, and while she was there, she served several internships, including with the ACLU of Colorado, with a Canadian legal clinic and for a judge on the state’s 18th Judicial District, before obtaining her Juris Doctor in 2013.
Ms. Kamal’s practice primarily involves her representation of people whose marriages are coming to an end. In that regard, she assists them with such matters as property division, alimony, child support, and child custody and visitation. Ms. Kamal’s background in mediation allows her to guide her clients through that process of alternative dispute resolution, but she also advocates on their behalf in court when litigation proves to be necessary. Her family law experience has also encompassed the preparation and review of prenuptial and post-marital agreements, and she has helped clients who have already gotten a divorce and who are now seeking the enforcement of or modifications to existing support and parenting orders.
Ms. Kamal is highly regarded by her colleagues for the way she handles what can often be emotional and contentious matters, and this is reflected in her 10.0 “Superb” peer review rating through Avvo as well as her multi-year receipt of 5280 Magazine's Top Lawyer Award. She is fluent in Spanish, Hindi and Urdu, and has been admitted to practice in Colorado since 2014.
