The founder of the Colorado Family Law Project, now celebrating its tenth year, Maha Kamal has shifted her practice toward mediation, collaborative law, and legal education, moving away from adversarial litigation. Based in Denver, Colorado, she offers unbundled legal services, mediation through the Office of Dispute Resolution, and Urgent Counsel consultations to clients throughout the state. She is a state-qualified mediator.
Ms. Kamal co-chaired the Colorado Supreme Court committee that established the Licensed Legal Paraprofessional (LLP) program, seeing it through from its inception to the inaugural class being sworn in. She currently serves on the Colorado Supreme Court's Domestic Relations Judicial Training subcommittee, is a multi-year member of the Colorado Bar Association's Legislative Policy Committee, and is a trustee of the American Humanist Foundation. She has forthcoming presentations with AFCC and the American Bar Association's Family Law Section on family violence, immigration, and AI. Her book, Colorado Family Law: A Trail Guide, and her Family Law Fridays Substack are both popular resources for family law professionals and litigants alike.
Her practice centers on guiding people through the end of a marriage and its aftermath, including property division, alimony, child support, and parenting time. Her background in mediation allows her to walk clients through alternative dispute resolution, and she continues to advocate for clients in litigation when necessary, along with prenuptial agreements and post-decree enforcement and modifications.
Ms. Kamal is widely respected for how she handles emotionally difficult and contentious matters, recognized by 5280 Magazine's Top Lawyers and Super Lawyers Rising Stars. She is fluent in Spanish, Hindi, and Urdu.
