CLIENT TESTIMONIALS
I was involved in a motor vehicle accident… Attorney Zrenda explained everything in detail to me and within less than two months the case was settled and I was quite pleased with the outcome. I had never had to contact a law firm before, but I am very thankful that I chose this one. I hope this helps somebody that may be undecided on which law firm to call. Thank you again to all the men and women that worked on both of my cases. It was greatly appreciated. -Mark Manley
I cannot recommend this law firm highly enough. From the very beginning of my case through the final settlement, Kyle Zrenda demonstrated professionalism, expertise, and genuine care for my situation. He kept me informed at every step, explained the process clearly, and always made himself available to answer my questions. What stood out most was Kyle’s dedication and strategic approach. He fought hard on my behalf and ultimately secured a settlement that exceeded my expectations. I truly felt that he had my best interest at heart throughout the entire process. If you are looking for a law firm that is knowledgeable, responsive, and committed to achieving the best possible outcome, I highly recommend Kyle. I am incredibly grateful for his hard work and support during a very stressful time. -Alisha W.

- SUISMAN SHAPIRO’S MUNICIPAL TEAM ACHIEVES HIGH COURT REVERSAL IN LANDMARK BENEFITS CASE Attorneys Kristi Kelly and Kyle Zrenda, along with the firm’s municipal law team, achieved a major victory for the Town of Groton in the Connecticut Supreme Court. The team persevered through disappointing outcomes in the lower courts and secured a Supreme Court reversal—a decision that directed judgment in favor of the Town. This outcome prevented what could have been significant and costly consequences not only for the Town of Groton but for municipalities across Connecticut. The case involved retired Groton police officers who argued that they were entitled to the same Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions that the Town provides to active police officers, relying on a 2008 pension agreement that guaranteed retirees the same health insurance “coverage and deductibles” as active employees. Attorneys Kelly and Zrenda, and the municipal team, successfully argued that HSA contributions are not part of health insurance coverage or a deductible, the Police Officers’ Union specifically agreed that retirees were not to receive HSA contributions, and, therefore, the retirees were not entitled to HSA contributions under the 2008 pension agreement. The Connecticut Supreme Court agreed, ruling that the financial source by which health insurance coverages, to include a deductible, is paid, is not in and of itself “coverage” or the “deductible” and the Town is not required to provide separate, supplemental benefits—such as HSA contributions—that fall outside the insurance policy itself, particularly where the Town and the Union that bargained the financial benefit for active employees expressly stated so. “As Groton’s Town Attorney, and a municipal labor lawyer, I am thrilled for the taxpayers of Groton that the Supreme Court understood the nuances of this case, particularly as they relate to public sector collective bargaining and what an HSA truly is,” states Attorney Kelly. “The ramifications of this victory extend far beyond this case and even the Town, as the language at issue, or language similar to it, is not only found in other collectively bargained agreements in Groton but in many public sector labor agreements across the state of Connecticut.” “This ruling provides clarity for municipalities statewide, ensuring that they are not obligated to extend supplemental financial benefits to retirees unless explicitly required by contract. The decision avoids the expensive and disruptive impact that the earlier rulings could have had on municipal budgets and labor practices, avoiding the imposition of hundreds of thousands of dollars in unintended supplemental benefits upon Groton’s taxpayers without the Town’s legislative body approval.”
- ATTORNEY KYLE ZRENDA SECURES $1,500,000 SETTLEMENT FOR INJURED MOTORCYCLISTAttorney Kyle Zrenda attained a $1,500,000 settlement for a motorcyclist injured in a collision with an SUV in Stonington. Attorney Zrenda’s client was coming home from a Fourth of July barbecue when the driver of an SUV failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign, colliding with the motorcycle. The motorcyclist had ten surgeries under general anesthesia. The other driver’s insurance carrier attempted to blame the motorcyclist for the collision, claiming that he had been speeding and was not wearing appropriate reflective clothing. Attorney Zrenda put forward evidence from an expert in accident reconstruction to counter these arguments, convincing the insurance company that it should not risk a trial, avoiding months if not years of litigation, while still securing the compensation his client was entitled to under the law.
- ATTORNEY KYLE ZRENDA WIN OVER $284,000 AT TRIAL ON BEHALF OF CLIENT INJURED IN WORKPLACE SLIPFollowing a two-day trial, a New London County jury awarded Attorneys Kyle Zrenda client $284,514.07 for injuries he suffered in a slip on a wet floor at work. Despite not putting up any warning signs, the defendant, a commercial cleaning company, argued that the wet floor was not dangerous, and should have been obvious to the client. Suisman Shapiro’s team was able to convince the jury that the floor was hazardous, and that their client could not have seen its dangerous condition before he slipped. The client, a 33-year-old New London man, previously injured his back in a car accident four months earlier. Attorney Zrenda successfully argued that his slip made those back injuries worse, and played an important role in his need for additional treatment.
- ATTORNEY KYLE ZRENDA WINS SUMMARY JUDGMENT FOR SMALL BUSINESSAttorney Kyle Zrenda won summary judgment in favor of the firm’s client, a small business that was sued by a disgruntled former independent contractor. Summary judgment is quite rare, and is only granted when the judge decides that one party is entitled to judgment as a matter of law and that a trial is not necessary. Summary judgment not only means that the client received a fantastic result, but that they reached that result without having to incur the considerable cost of a trial. Before Suisman Shapiro took over the case, the client was in default, meaning it had no right to defend itself against the plaintiff’s allegations. Not only was our team able to remove the default, but was able to convince the judge there was no question our client should win. Attorney Zrenda commented that “our client was really behind the eight ball when we took this case over, but we were able to utilize creative arguments to efficiently bring about a great outcome.”
