After graduating from Emory University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts in history, Mr. Coffey attended Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctor cum laude in 1996. The Florida Bar admitted him to practice that same year, and Mr. Coffey is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Regarded as a leader in his field, Mr. Coffey regularly serves as guest lecturer for legal classes at both Nova Southeastern University and St. Thomas University School of Law. In addition, he helped create an on-line graduate level course for the Nova Southeastern University Criminal Justice Institute, which focuses on juvenile law.

Active in his legal community, Mr. Coffey is a member of the Broward Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He serves his local community through his involvement with the Florida Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association, as well as serving on the advisory board of the Autism on the Seas organization.
