Michael M. Shemkus has built his legal career around one of the most consequential areas of law, the kind that touches people at their most vulnerable. As the owner of Shemkus Family Law, P.A., in Naples, Florida, he brings a rare combination of academic rigor, board-certified expertise and genuine commitment to the individuals and families who walk through his door. His practice encompasses the full spectrum of family law, including but not limited to:
- Divorce
- Child custody and time-sharing
- Support matters
- Alimony
- Business owners' divorce
- Business valuation
Mr. Shemkus approaches each matter with a clear understanding that no two clients share the same circumstances, crafting strategies aligned with each client's individual goals, needs and concerns.
Educationally, Mr. Shemkus earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Lewis & Clark College before going on to receive his Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law. He is admitted to practice in Illinois (2013), Florida (2014) and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois. Distinguishing himself further, he holds board certification in marital and family law from The Florida Bar, a credential that reflects both a depth of knowledge and a sustained dedication to excellence in this specialized field.
Beyond the courtroom, Mr. Shemkus contributes meaningfully to the development of family law thought and practice. His articles include “The Real Impact of the Equal Time-Sharing Presumption” (Adverse Witness, vol. 244, 2026), “The Dubious Role of Pregnancy in Dissolution of Marriage Proceedings” (The Family Law Commentator, Spring 2023) and a series of insightful analyses on private judges, alimony issues and procedural compliance. These writings demonstrate his commitment to shaping discourse in family law practice.
Furthermore, Mr. Shemkus frequently shares his knowledge at professional gatherings. He has co-presented on deposition practice for the Collier County Bar Association, served as moderator for judicial panels at the Charlotte County Family Law Convention and delivered keynote presentations for the Association of Family Law Professionals.
