He has earned recognition as having secured some of the largest verdicts ever awarded in Georgia history, and he has obtained awards of $279 million and more than $349 million for class actions as well as cases that fall under the False Claims Act.

He has also received the American Board of Trial Advocates Civil Justice Award in 1993 as well as the State Bar of Georgia Tradition of Excellence Award in 2002. 

    A leader in his legal community, Mr. Butler has served as president and vice president of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, and he has served as chairman of the organization's Environmental Protection Committee. He also served on the board of directors of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division from 1998 to 2005. He is a former president of the Columbus Trial Lawyers Association, where he has served as member of the Amicus Curiae Committee as well as chairman of the Special Jones Committee.

    Mr. Butler is a former member of the State Bar of Georgia's Disciplinary Board Review Panel, and he is a member of the Alabama Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice and the Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, among his other professional affiliations. A 1972 graduate of the University of Georgia, he obtained his Juris Doctor in 1977 from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he was a member of the Woodruff Merit Scholar Law Review and the Georgia Law Review.

    He won several moot court competitions as a law student, earning Best Oralist in the Southern Moot Court Competition and upon graduation from law school, he was selected for The Order of the Barristers.
