A native of Fitzgerald, Georgia, Mr. Coxen moved to the Atlanta area in 2000 while attending law school at Georgia State University College of Law. There, Mr. Coxen excelled academically, graduating with honors, Cum Laude. While at Georgia State, Mr. Coxen was also a member of the award-winning Student Trial Lawyers Association Mock Trial Team and interned at the Dekalb County Solicitor General’s Office, practicing under Georgia’s Third Year Practice Act, in the summer of 2002.
The experience would prove invaluable, as he began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Newton County District Attorney’s Office in Covington, Georgia. There, he gained valuable trial experience prosecuting thousands of felony and misdemeanor cases, ranging from traffic violations to murder cases.
Mr. Coxen entered private practice in 2006 and opened his own practice in 2010. His current practice focuses on family law and criminal defense cases (including DUI). He provides representation to clients throughout the entire metro Atlanta area, with a focus on the east metro Atlanta area.
Mr. Coxen has demonstrated a consistent track record of excellence in advocating for clients. A particularly noteworthy accomplishment is his litigation of a divorce that addressed a previously unresolved issue of law in Georgia that was litigated with the trial court, appealed to the Supreme Court of Georgia and Mr. Coxen's argument and advocacy led to the establishment of new law in Georgia related to that issue and a very successful outcome for his client.
Mr. Coxen is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, is licensed to practice law in all state courts of Georgia and the U.S. Federal District Court, in the Middle District of Georgia. Furthermore, he actively participates in his community, his local church and previously served as a member of the board of directors for the Georgia College Alumni Association. He is rated “Superb” on Avvo, with over 200 five-star reviews and has been recognized as one of The National Trial Lawyers Top 100.

Verdicts / Settlements (Case Results)
- Hardin v. Hardin, 801 S.E.2d 774 (Ga. 2017) Stephen Coxen represented a client in a divorce matter where one of the most contested issues in the divorce was whether the client's spouse would have an interest in the remainder of the unused portion of disability insurance policy benefits the client had received some years ago. This is an issue that had previously been unaddressed by the Georgia courts. Mr. Coxen argued this issue to the trial court where the court agreed with Mr. Coxen, granted partial summary judgment on that issue and determined that the benefits were the separate property of the injured client. That decision was appealed to the Georgia Supreme Court and that court too agreed with Mr. Coxen and determined the remaining benefits were the separate property of the injured client. Further, the Supreme Court followed Mr. Coxen's argument and legal theory, expounded on it, and established what the law of the State of Georgia will be moving forward as it pertains to the division of disability insurance benefits in a divorce proceeding, 2017
