Attorney Profile

Having a tenure spanning four decades, John A. Draughon, Sr. (pronounced phonetically “Drawn”) worked as a law clerk, associate and partner in the Macon law firm, Sell, Comer and Popper, and its successor, Sell & Melton.

Subsequently, Mr. Draughon served as of counsel to the firm of Cooper, Draughon & Cooper LLP, from which he departed in 2018. That led to his founding of the Draughon Law Group, LLC, in the latter part of 2018.

The Draughon group is a small boutique firm which specializes in business litigation, with the primary emphasis on eminent domain and hospital law.

Mr. Draughon has also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the state of Georgia, providing representation to the Georgia Department of Transportation in condemnation proceedings.

After earning a Bachelor of Business Administration from Emory University in 1968, he served on active duty as a Personnel Officer in the United States Air Force from 1968 until 1972. Mr. Draughon then went on to attend Mercer University School of Law and was awarded his Juris Doctor cum laude in 1975. Mr. Draughon also has a Master of Business Administration from Georgia College.

Mr. Draughon has taken more than 40 civil cases to jury verdict. In one of his more high-profile trials, he secured a wrongful death jury verdict for the family of a young man whose serious heart condition, which ultimately caused his death, had gone undiagnosed by his physician. At the time, it was the largest civil verdict in that county.

Admitted to practice in all of the Georgia State Courts, Mr. Draughon is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Active in a variety of professional organizations, Mr. Draughon is a member of the Macon and American Bar Associations, and he is the former president of the Georgia Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). He has also served as Chairman and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Navicent Health Foundation. Mr. Draughon is a 1982 graduate of Leadership Macon and has been recognized as a Georgia Super Lawyer.
