Exclusively devoted to criminal defense law, Lawrence Zimmerman is the founder of his firm, Lawrence J. Zimmerman. He is known for excellence in protecting clients in Atlanta and throughout northern Georgia in matters involving fraud, felonies, misdemeanors, drug crimes and sex crimes.

In 1994, Mr. Zimmerman received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Florida. He then attended the Roger Williams University School of Law, earning a Juris Doctor in 1998.

From his days in law school, Mr. Zimmerman has had one focus: defending clients throughout the criminal process. At any point –– during an investigation, arrest or trial –– someone’s rights may be in jeopardy. Mr. Zimmerman is backed by decades of experience navigating each of these circumstances. He has appeared in state and federal courts on a client’s behalf.

Among his accomplishments, Mr. Zimmerman has been successul in acquitting or having charges dismissed against clients who have been charged with serious felony offenses including charges such as murder, sex offenses, and white collar crimes. While he handles all serious felony offenses, a large part of his practice is dedicated to representing those accused of sex crimes. 

For his achievements and exceptional client service, Mr. Zimmerman holds an Avvo “Superb” rating. The Southern Center for Human Rights also presented him in 2018 with its Gideon’s Promise Award for his legal defense for the man falsely accused of burning the Atlanta interstate. He also received an Emmy Award for the Southeastern Region for some television work he did as part of a legal panel for 11 Alive News.

Mr. Zimmerman is a member of organizations such as the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers where he is currently Vice-President and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.  From 2015-2018 he also worked with the Atlanta Falcons security team.

  • This award was bestowed upon the legal team of Basil Eleby. He was the homeless man falsely accused of setting the Atlanta highway on fire. The burning of this bridge snarled traffic for months in Atlanta and caused issues for many traveling in and out of the city. Due to our legal work, we were able to show the District Attorney that Mr. Eleby had an alibi and was being falsely accused of the crime. Thus, this prestigious award was given to Mr. Zimmerman and the other attorneys on the team, Gideon's Promise Award, Southern Center for Human Rights, 2018


  • Represented a lawyer falsely accused of Peeping Tom. We presented all of our digital evidence including alarm panel entries and surveillance video. The District Attorney agreed to not indict and dropped the case. , 2019
  • Represented an NFL player in a local case. We were able to have all of the charges successfully dropped. , 2017
  • Client falsey accused of rape in Cobb County and unfortunately it was all over the news because it involved college students. We did an extensive investigation and presented the evidence to the District Attorney who agreed to drop all of the charges. , 2018
  • Client falsely accused of rape in Forsyth County. After an extensive investigation by our office, we convinced the District Attorney to drop the charges and not file an indictment. , 2018
  • Represented a Cobb County foster parent in Douglas County Superior Court who was charged with child molestation. He was falsely accused by the police and a cashier at Sears. The child said nothing happened to him and that my client (the grandfather) did nothing inappropriate. We tried the case to a jury which resulted in a Not Guilty on Counts 1 & 3 with a directed verdict on Count 2. , 2019
