Laura Benz, founder of Benz Law Group, LLC, in Newnan, Georgia, is a highly respected attorney with a distinguished background in environmental and regulatory law. From a young age, she demonstrated drive, focus and a passion for making a positive impact on her community – qualities that continue to define her practice today.
Ms. Benz earned dual degrees from Furman University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in environmental science and a Bachelor of Arts in political science in just four years. She later received an academic scholarship to attend Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor before returning to Georgia to begin her career.
With decades of experience, Ms. Benz represents local governments, public utilities, developers, and private individuals on state and federal environmental planning, permitting, regulatory compliance, and natural resource management. Her deep understanding of the Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act, National Historic Preservation Act, and Endangered Species Act has enabled her to consistently achieve favorable outcomes for her clients, including securing five of the last five new reservoir permits issued in Georgia over the past decade. Known for her integrity, honesty and strong work ethic, she has built lasting relationships founded on trust and results.
Ms. Benz is admitted to practice before the Georgia Supreme Court, Georgia Court of Appeals, Superior Courts of Georgia, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. She is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the Atlanta Bar Association, the Association of Women Environmental Professionals and the Georgia Association of Water Professionals.
Dedicated to public service, Ms. Benz provides pro bono legal support for minor criminal and civil matters and volunteers with the Georgia Legal Military Assistance Program and Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), reflecting her lifelong commitment to serving her community.

- Successfully represented adjacent property owners in opposing the rezoning of a property for the construction of an approximately 800-acre solar farm. , 2023
- Represented a local government in enforcement and defense of compensatory mitigation property to obtain remediation as well as avoid federal regulatory enforcement for violations of a CWA permit. , 2024
- Represented developer in erosion and sedimentation control claims by local governing body. , 2024
- Obtained the necessary federal and state permits for the Cherokee C&D landfill expansion for Waste Pro
- Serve as project manager for the required state and federal permits for the Bear Creek Water Supply Project, South Fulton Municipal Regional Water & Sewer Authority

- Represented purchaser in property acquisition of HSRA property for redevelopment., 2023
- Obtained withdrawal permit from the Chattahoochee River below Atlanta for the Middle Chattahoochee WSA. This was the first direct withdrawal permit from this section of the River over the past twenty years., 2020

- Negotiated the purchase of compensatory mitigation credits for a 404 permit to expand an existing reservoir, saving the client millions of what was originally offered and making the project financially feasible., 2021

- Handled a Cherokee Indian Repatriation on behalf of the City of Canton
- Obtained all necessary state and federal permits for the 410-acre Lake McIntosh Water Supply Reservoir - Fayette County, 2008
- Obtained the Hickory Log Creek Water Supply Reservoir 404 permit - City of Canton & Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority
- Obtained 404 permit for 960-acre Tired Creek Fishing Lake - the first non-DNR fishing lake permitted in the State of Georgia, 2010
