Attorney Profile

Barry A. Sullivan dedicates his practice to commercial real estate and finance transactions throughout the State of Hawaii, including matters relating to the purchase and sale of hotels and other complex commercial properties, asset deleveraging, business restructuring, zoning and entitlements, debt workouts, land use and commercial leasing. Additionally, Mr. Sullivan represents business clients in commercial, business and real estate litigation, along with environmental and professional malpractice litigation.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in economics and then completing graduate work in economics and finance from the University of Cincinnati, Mr. Sullivan earned his Juris Doctor with honors from Cornell Law School in 1992. While in law school, he served on the Cornell International Law Journal. Mr. Sullivan is admitted to practice in the State of Hawaii and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.

During his nearly twenty-five years of practice, Mr. Sullivan has become trusted counsel to some of the most successful and active private equity funds, institutional investors, and developers doing business in Hawaii. Since 2005, Mr. Sullivan has acted as lead or local counsel in nearly $8 Billion in real estate and corporate financings and over $4 Billion in real estate and development projects.

Throughout his career, Mr. Sullivan has actively participated in a variety of professional associations and won several commendations, including a 10.0 "Superb" rating from Avvo and listings within multiple practice areas of Best Lawyers in America*. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute, NAIOP, the Hawaii State Bar Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute, for whose journal he co-authored an article on jurisdiction issues in international bankruptcies.  That article arose out of Mr. Sullivan's handling of one of the first matters under the new Article 15 of the Bankruptcy Code, which matter led to a leading appellate decision affirming his proper application of that untested law.
