Gail Y. Cosgrove

Gail Y. Cosgrove is a partner in the law firm of Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel.  Her work involves civil litigation, primarily medical liability, complex litigation, product liability and toxic tort litigation.  Ms. Cosgrove is a Lecturer-in-Law for the William S. Richardson School of Law where she has taught Pretrial Litigation to second and third year law students.  She is listed in the Hawaii Super Lawyers list which recognizes five percent of Hawaii's top attorneys who have distinguished themselves in their legal practice.  She is also listed in SuperProfessors which is a peer reviewed group of academics that consistently demonstrate excellence, passion, and clarity throughout their academic careers.  Ms. Cosgrove is a member of the Judicial Arbitration Commission which oversees the Court Annexed Arbitraton Program.  She is also a member of the Special Committee on Judicial Performance.  She is also a Lawyer Delegate for the United District Court for the District of Hawaii; the selection process was based upon all attorneys appearing before the Court.  Ms. Cosgrove has participated in numerous legal education seminars and workshops as a speaker on a variety of topics including medical liability, tort law, civil motions practice, experts, evidence, insurance coverage, professionalism and civility.  She is an active member of the Hawaii Women's Legal Foundation, a nonprofit organization which provides grants to programs that benefit women and children in need.  She has served as its President and Vice-President, and has chaired the annual fundraiser which typically counts 400-500 persons in attendance.  Significant cases include representation of a 26 year old paraplegic in a product liability lawsuit against a seatbelt manufacturer.  After a six week jury trial, the jury return a verdict of $19 million, including $12.5 million in punitive damages, which the defendant described as "record-setting."  Ms. Cosgrove also represented a building products manufacturer in a property damage lawsuit filed by the State of Hawaii which included 250 public buildings, over 11 million documents producted in discovery and hundreds of expert and fact witness depositions.  The Attorney General's office described the case as the largest, most complex case ever filed in Hawaii.
