Charles Lee Mudd Jr. is the founder and principal of Mudd Law. For over twenty years, he has focused on intellectual property, the Internet, and technology law, becoming one of the foremost thought leader in these sectors. Over the last several years, he strategically placed his firm to provide critical advice and counsel to actors within the emerging commercial space economy, the aerospace industry, and the broader astro sector. His policy work in this area has included participation in United Nations conferences on space law and policy in Moscow (2018) and Istanbul (2019); testimony on regulatory proposals at the federal level; and, development of sound strategies for the future of space exploration. In 2020, he was elected to the International Institute of Space Law. He is also a member of the European Center for Space Law, the American Astronomical Society, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He serves on the Board for NewSpace Chicago.
Mr. Mudd received a B.A. in philosophy and a M.A. in political science from Purdue University. He obtained his Juris Doctor from Quinnipiac University School of Law in 1997 graduating magna cum laude and 4th in his class. After law school, he completed both a state appellate and federal trial clerkship after which he practiced in the commercial litigation and emerging technologies practice groups at a mid-size New England law firm before founding Mudd Law. Since 2017, Charles has completed courses in graduate astrophysics at the University of Chicago in its Graduate Student at Large Program.
Apart from managing his firm and its three offices in Chicago, Houston, and Park City, Charles has taught technology and privacy courses as an adjunct faculty member. Highly regarded for his experience and insight in Internet and privacy, he has drafted proposed state legislation and testified in support of data breach proposed legislation. Within the broader legal community, he serves as a Board Member for the International Technology Law Association, has held leadership positions within the Illinois State Bar Association, and is a founding member of the Internet Law Leadership Summit. He frequently lectures throughout the world.
Admitted to practice in Connecticut, Indiana, Illinois, and Utah, Charles is also licensed to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Districts of Colorado and Utah; the Central and Northern Districts of Illinois; the Western District of Wisconsin; as well as the Northern Districts of Florida, Indiana, and Ohio. He is additionally licensed to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th, 7th, and 10th Circuits.
