Details

Clifford W. Horwitz is a principal partner at the premier Chicago trial law firm of Horwitz Horwitz & Associates. Cliff possesses over 30 years of experience and an outstanding success record. He won virtually every case he has taken to trial since 1985. In addition to securing what was the highest personal injury verdict in Illinois history, Cliff has also set numerous record setting jury verdicts.

Cliff graduated from Loyola University College of Law with a Juris Doctor and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar Association in 1984. He is licensed to practice before the United States District Courts for the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Cliff has focused his entire career on personal injury law, which includes construction accidents, railroad accidents, truck accidents, auto accidents, product liability, and wrongful death. His success is a result of his focus on his clients and the trusting relationship he builds with each one.

In 2012, Clifford Horwitz and the trial team at Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates won what was the largest jury verdict in Illinois history for compensatory nondeath. The $64 million verdict was awarded on behalf of an ironworker who fell and was left paralyzed after a jobsite accident. Less than 2 years later, Cliff and the lead trial team secured another record-setting jury verdict - this time on behalf of an injured carpenter. The verdict was the highest ever recorded in the state of a non-amputation hand injury. Another two years passed, and Cliff and the lead trial team won two back-to-back record-setting jury verdicts in 2016. The jury awarded a record $10 Million verdict for their client who suffered from complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) after being hit by a hand truck. Less than a month after the award, the trial team secured another record-setting jury verdict on behalf of an injured ironworker. The jury's verdict was the highest adult male shoulder injury verdict in Illinois history.

Clifford Horwitz's success has not gone unnoticed by the legal community. In 2017, Clifford Horwitz was named among the Top 100 SuperLawyers for Illinois - an honor and a coveted position that is difficult to achieve. In addition, Cliff has been consistently recognized by the National Trial Lawyers Top 100. He was named a Leading Lawyer through a survey of his peers conducted by Leading Leading Lawyers Network, and subsequently added to the Leading Lawyers Advisory Board. Leading Lawyers notes advisory board members are arguably the "best of the best" as a result of their experience, lawyering skills, professional ethics, and the respect of their peers. Cliff holds the highest rating possible on AVVO and is Martindale-Hubbell Distinguished. In addition, he is often a guest speaker on legal issues at trade union conferences and has written over 100 articles on various legal matters for multiple publications.

Clifford Horwitz has been honored with membership in the American Association for Justice, the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum. He is also a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Will County Bar Association, and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.

Verdicts/Settlements:
  • A woman who suffers from chronic pain due to complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), which arose after being struck on the leg by a hand truck, received a $10,000,000 verdict from a Cook County jury. The amount is an Illinois record for a CRPS injury, according to the Jury Verdict Reporter.   Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), formerly known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), is a chronic pain condition characterized by severe pain that often worsens over time, sensitivity, swelling, and skin changes. A hallmark of the condition is pain that is out of proportion to the severity of the initial injury. Clifford Horwitz filed the lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging that the employee operating the hand truck failed to give warning to store customers while he pushed the hand truck and that the crates were stacked so high that the employee’s vision was obstructed. Clifford Horwitz and Michael Carter tried the case resulting in the record verdict., 2016
  • Clifford Horwitz, Jay Luchsinger, and Michael Carter of the premier Chicago trial law firm, Horwitz Horwitz & Associates, recovered another record-setting verdict less than two years after recovering the largest non-death compensatory verdict in Illinois history. Jurors returned a verdict in favor of a union carpenter. The carpenter was awarded a $5.7 million verdict after his hand was drilled through while installing the partions on dressing room doors for handicapped persons at the Prentice Women's Hospital. The drill bit wrapped his ulnar nerve ultimately resulting in stage III CRPS-II (also known as causalgia). The award from case, Gary Markovich v. ISEC Inc. et. al., No. 09 L 8227, is a new record for non-amputation hand injury in Illinois., 2014
  • $13 million dollars higher than the previous record of verdict in Illinois of $51 million. After 5 years of litigation and a one month long jury trial, a Cook County jury awarded a local 393 ironworker $64 million. The jury actually awarded Ron $80 million, but found that he was 20% at fault and therefore, reduced the verdict to $64 million. The case is Ronald Bayer vs. Panduit Corporation 07 L 9877. Mr. Bayer was represented by Clifford Horwitz, 30 years of trial experience, Jay Luchsinger, a former third generation local 1 ironworker and 25 year trial lawyer, and Michael Carter, a former local 157 pipe fitter and 15 year trial lawyer, of the Chicago law firm of Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates. Defendant Panduit Corporation was represented by John W. Patton and Michael Vranicar of Patton & Ryan
  • A Cook County jury awarded a record-setting verdict of $8 million to a union ironworker who suffered a severe shoulder injury after a barge operated by ARTCO collided with his safety boat on the Chicago River. Horwitz filed the lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging that ARTCO, its employees, and crew failed in providing adequate protocol, policies, procedures, and rules for the Chicago River, in addition to improperly training employees to heed warning notices of the construction zone and possible weather conditions that would create hazards with the barge. Clifford Horwitz, Michael Carter, and Jay Luchsinger, partners at Horwitz Horwitz & Associates, tried the case. The trial lasted three weeks and the jury found no fault on Fonte. The jury rejected ARTCO’s claim that Fonte’s damages should be limited to the value of the boat – allowing Fonte to recover the full $8,000,000 verdict., 2016

  • The Avvo Rating is Avvo's effort to evaluate a lawyer’s background based on the information available in an attorney’s Avvo profile. Avvo creates the rating using a model that considers information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information Avvo collects from public sources like state bar associations and lawyer websites. Any information that affects the Avvo Rating is visible in an attorney’s profile. There is no bias. The rating is calculated using a mathematical model, and all lawyers are evaluated on the same set of standards. The Avvo Rating cannot be bought. At Avvo, all lawyers are treated equally.  It was developed by legal professionals and people looking for legal services. The model used to calculate the rating was developed with input from hundreds of attorneys, thousands of consumers, and many other legal professionals who deeply understand the work attorneys do. Avvo Rating was created to reflect the type of information people have identified as important when looking to hire an attorney. It’s as simple as counting to 10. Ratings fall on a scale of 1 (Extreme Caution) to 10 (Superb), helping you quickly assess a lawyer’s background based on the rating., Superb 10 Rating, AVVO, 2017
