As the founding partner of James A. Shapiro Law, James A. Shapiro has decades of experience in criminal law. As a retired Cook County judge and former state criminal defense attorney for nearly two decades, he represents clients throughout the Chicago metropolitan area who are facing state or federal misdemeanor and felony charges.

Mr. Shapiro received his bachelor's degree in history and philosophy from Trinity College in 1981. He went on to attend the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary and was awarded his Juris Doctor in 1985. While in law school he was a member of the William & Mary Moot Court, earning best oralist and first place team member. Upon graduation, he was named to the Order of the Barristers.

After graduating from law school, Mr. Shapiro was an Assistant U.S. Attorney with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois. In 2003, he became an adjunct professor at The John Marshall Law School. In 2007, he was appointed as a judge for the Circuit Court of Cook County, where he was rated "Highly Qualified" by The Chicago Bar Association, its highest rating. In 2012, he went into private practice and in 2016 formed his own firm. He has been an adjunct professor of intensive trial advocacy at Loyola University School of Law.

Mr. Shapiro is admitted to practice before all Illinois state courts as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. Highly regarded by his fellow attorneys, he holds a 10.0 "Superb" peer review rating through Avvo.
