A top-rated, award-winning trial attorney with over 20 years of legal experience, Ms. Battersby Black devotes her practice exclusively to advocating on behalf of plaintiff injury clients who are suffering needlessly as the result of someone else's negligent, careless, or unlawful actions.
Although she has achieved considerable success handling all types of serious personal injury and wrongful death claims, Ms. Battersby Black has gained a reputation as a leader in nursing home abuse and negligence claims. She has recovered millions of dollars in settlements and verdicts for her clients for issues involving falls in nursing homes, medication errors, bed sores and more, including a record-breaking verdict of more than $4.1 million for an elderly woman adversely affected by medication mismanagement.
Additionally, Ms. Battersby Black has also handled numerous medical malpractice claims involving a wide range of issues, and she helped secure a settlement of more than $17.7 million for a medical malpractice victim along with many other multimillion-dollar awards for her clients. Honored for her professionalism and service, she has earned a Leading Lawyer designation, and the Law Bulletin Publishing Company named her as one of the 40 Illinois Attorneys Under Forty to Watch in 2011.
Establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with in birth injury litigation, Margaret played a key role in multiple recent birth injury victories at the firm, including a $29 million settlement on behalf of a young girl who suffered an injury at birth due to negligence.
In 2023, Margaret received the prestigious Carole K. Bellows Women of Influence Award. She has also been recognized among the top attorneys in her field, earning a spot on the Super Lawyers® Top 100 Attorneys list and the Top 50 Women list in both 2024 and 2025.
Moreover, Ms. Battersby Black has received the Trial Lawyer Excellence Award from the Jury Verdict Reporter and the Women's Bar Association Service Award. She has also received designation from Crain's Custom Media and among Chicago's Notable Women Lawyers, and she received the President's Award from the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association in 2018.
A 2002 honors graduate of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Ms. Battersby Black obtained her Juris Doctor with honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2008. While there, she was a member of the American Constitution Society as well as the Chicago-Kent Moot Court Honors Society.
Ms. Battersby Black has served in a number of leadership roles with both the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and the Women's Bar Association of Illinois. She also helped establish the Illinois Trial Lawyers Women’s Caucus, where she served as inaugural chair. Currently, Margaret serves as Treasurer of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. She is an active member of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys, the Illinois State and Chicago Bar Associations and the American Association for Justice, among her other professional affiliations.
Outside her legal practice, Ms. Battersby Black works hard to support the advancement of women in the legal profession, and she has written extensively and conducted lectures and continuing legal education seminars across her region on a variety of legal topics. Recently, Margaret wrote an article for the Daily Herald discussing the importance of hiring and retaining more female lawyers. In recognition for her outstanding contributions to her field, she received the Outstanding Young Alumna of the Year award from Chicago-Kent Law School in 2015.
