Mary Katherine Avery

As a partner and founding member of Avery | Kill, LLC, Mary Katherine Avery has dedicated her career to serving clients regarding a wide variety of family law needs. She has represented individuals and families regarding divorce, asset allocation and evaluation, child custody and support, spousal support and alimony, and numerous other aspects of family law in the Chicago, Illinois, area.

Ms. Avery received her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1989. She earned her law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1993. Following law school, she practiced in the field of family law exclusively. Prior to forming Avery | Kill, LLC, she was an associate at another Chicago firm from 1993 - 2000.

In her decades of experience in family law, Ms. Avery has focused much of her practice on child custody and visitation matters, working with clients through heavy litigation and the trial process, as well as division of assets. She has also worked extensively on allegations of child abuse, substance abuse issues, child endangerment, and other sensitive aspects of the family legal world. She frequently works closely with accountants, forensic evaluators and financial experts to determine and litigate the character and division of marital assets and nonmarital assets.

Ms. Avery has been listed as a leading lawyer in Leading Lawyers - Law Bulletin every year since 2011. She is a member of the Women's Bar Association, Chicago Council of Lawyers, The Chicago Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association. She is also a frequent speaker on the topic of orders of protection and domestic violence.
