Scott J. Kater

Scott J. Kater is a partner at Clifford Law Offices in Chicago, Illinois. Advocating for clients in the Chicago metropolitan area in cases involving personal injury and medical malpractice, he holds extensive experience in handling complex claims involving physicians, hospitals, medical groups and health care institutions. He is committed to holding parties accountable, guiding clients through profound loss, and striving for outcomes that appropriately address the severity of the harm they have suffered.

Mr. Kater graduated from Miami University with a bachelor’s degree in political science before enrolling at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. While at law school, he was part of various moot court competitions and was recognized as the Third Best Speaker in the Andrews Kurth Moot Court National Championship Competition in 2016. He also served as a judicial extern to the Hon. Raymond W. Mitchell in the Law Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County. 

Earning his license to practice law in Illinois in 2016, Mr. Kater has accumulated extensive courtroom experience in both state and federal courts. He has served as lead counsel in complex motion practice proceedings and as second chair in jury trials. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. 

Outside of courtrooms, Mr. Kater is an active member of the Chicago Bar Association, where he serves as the moot court team coach. He is also recognized for his strong legal writing and advocacy skills, for which he received the CALI Awards for Academic Excellence while attending law school. He was included in The Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch list in medical malpractice law and legal malpractice law for 3 consecutive years and was recognized as a Leading Lawyer: Emerging Lawyer in 2023 and 2024.
