He received his undergraduate degree from Franklin College in 1983, where he graduated summa cum laude. He graduated cum laude from the Indiana University School of Law in 1986, and then began his legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable Patrick D. Sullivan at the Indiana Court of Appeals.
