The Kentucky Bar Association admitted Mr. O’Brien to practice that same year, and he practices before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky as well as before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 6th and 11th Circuits. He is also admitted to practice in Florida since 1976.
Joining the law firm Savage, Garmer, Elliot & O’Brien as a partner in 2000, Mr. O’Brien climbed the ladder to become the sole partner and owner of the firm Stephen M. O’Brien, III, PLLC, about nine years later. In 2017, he became the senior member of his current firm O'Brien Batten Kirtley & Coomer, PLLC.
Mr. O'Brien serves on the adjunct legal faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Law, where he teaches courses involving effective litigation skills. He is also highly active in his legal community, as evidenced by his memberships with several local, state and national bar associations, including the Fayette County Bar Association, the Kentucky Academy of Trial Attorneys, the American Association for Justice and the American Bar Association, among others.
