After his discharge, Mr. Sheffer served as an educator at his local high school as well as a football, baseball and basketball coach. Upon receiving his license to practice law, he served as a criminal prosecutor for several years, and he has handled cases in Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee as well as in various other jurisdictions across the country.
Mr. Sheffer received a football scholarship to attend Western Kentucky University, where he graduated in 1960. While there, he was president of his senior class and the "W" club as well as student body president. He also earned designation as a Distinguished Military Graduate. After deciding to pursue his legal career, he attended the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law, obtaining his Juris Doctor in 1967.
The Kentucky Bar Association admitted him to practice that same year, and he holds his admission to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is also an active member of the Kentucky, Louisville and American Bar Associations as well as the Defense Research Institute, Kentucky Defense Council, Inc. and the Kentucky Academy of Hospital Attorneys, among his other professional affiliations.
