James P. Roy is a senior partner and managing member of the plaintiffs' personal injury firm Domengeaux Wright Roy Edwards LLC in Lafayette, Louisiana. Focusing his practice on civil litigation, he represents plaintiffs throughout Louisiana and the Gulf coast  involving vehicular accidents, admiralty and maritime law, personal injury and wrongful death. Mr. Roy has served as co-lead class counsel for the BP Oil Spill, Deepwater Horizon multi-district federal litigation (MDL 2179). He has obtained possibly the largest individual maritime personal injury jury verdict in Louisiana (Becker v. Tidewater, WDLA).

Mr. Roy has received the highest possible recognition from his peers,  an AV-Preeminent* rating from Martindale-Hubbell and is recognized in The Best Lawyers in America in the fields of Personal Injury Law-plaintiffs, Maritime Law, as well as Mass Tort and Class Action litigation.  He has been selected  Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers three times: 2012 (Maritime Law- Baton Rouge area, which included Lafayette at that time), 2016 and 2018 (Personal Injury Plaintiffs- Laffayette area). In 2018 and again for 2019,  Superlawyers recognized him as one of the Top 10 lawyers in Louisiana.

He has been inducted as a  Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers [IATL] (limited to 500 active membersin North America under age 70), and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL).  Mr. Roy is a Past President of the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association (Now known as Louisiana Association for Justice). He is also a fellow in the LSU Foundation's 1860 Society and is a former member of the Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State University (Chairman, 2008-2009).

A native of Louisiana, Mr. Roy earned a Bachelor of Science from LSU in 1973. After receiving his Juris Doctor from LSU Law Center in 1976, he went on to obtain a Master of Laws from Georgetown University. Admitted to practice in Louisiana, Mr. Roy is also admitted before the all U.S. District Courts in Louisiana, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
