Attorney Profile

Owner of New Orleans-based King and Cooper Law LLC, Carolyn Cooper focuses her practice on criminal defense law.

A large portion of her caseload deals with the representation of area residents, students and visitors in the Parishes of Orleans, Jefferson, St. Charles and St. John.

She handles expungements, arrests for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and summons or arrests for misdemeanor violations, including possession of alcohol by a person under 21 (commonly referred to as an MIP). Ms. Cooper has had significant success for clients through her challenges to field sobriety, breath and blood tests administered by law enforcement authorities.

Ms. Cooper also provides representation to clients who have been charged with traffic offenses. The types of matters that she has handled have included speeding, failure to yield, running a red light, hit and run, expired registrations, inspection stickers and brake tags, and failure to maintain reasonable vigilance.

She also works with the Tulane University Legal Assistance Program (TULAP) as the supervisor of the criminal section. Through this work she has gained valuable insight and experience in  the additional complications that legal matters can have on future applications and licensing for professionals.

Ms. Cooper obtained her undergraduate education at the University of Washington in Seattle, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in social welfare in 2004. She then moved to New Orleans and attended Tulane University Law School and was awarded her Juris Doctor in 2010. While she was in law school, she clerked for the Tulane University Legal Assistance Program, volunteered with Orleans Public Defenders, and studied mediation in Germany as part of the school's study abroad program. Ms. Cooper is admitted to practice before all Louisiana state courts, and she has served as the chair of the Administrative Law Committee of the New Orleans Bar Association.

Founding member of King and Cooper Law LLC, who was her friend and mentor, Frederick J. King Jr., passed away May 4, 2017. She is honored that he selected her to carry on the legacy and the practice continues to help people who find themselves involved in the criminal justice system find solutions.
