Attorney Profile

The founder of WTB Law, William Bly focuses his practice on criminal defense matters. Located in Biddeford, Maine, he provides representation to residents of York and Cumberland counties and other parts of the state. Admitted to practice before all Maine state courts since 2005, Mr. Bly is also admitted to practice in New Hampshire as well as before the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine.

A significant portion of Mr. Bly's criminal defense practice consists of his representation of people who have been accused by the state of operating a vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. He has been able to construct strategies to counter these charges, including challenging the way that field sobriety and breath tests were conducted as well as questioning the traffic stop itself as not having been made with the requisite reasonable suspicion that a crime had been committed. Other state and federal matters that Mr. Bly has handled have included drug possession and trafficking, manslaughter, assault, domestic violence, rape and other sex crimes, weapons violations, and white collar offenses such as fraud and embezzlement. His successful track record over the course of his career has resulted in his receipt of a 10.0 "Superb" peer review rating through Avvo.

After obtaining an associate's degree in criminal justice, Mr. Bly enrolled at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where he majored in political science and received a Bachelor of Science in 2000. He then went on to attend the University of Maine School of Law and was awarded his Juris Doctor in 2004. Mr. Bly's professional affiliations include the Maine Trial Lawyers Association and the National College for DUI Defense.

Scholarly Lectures/Writings:

  • Co-Author, Defending DUI Vehicular Homicide Cases, 2nd Ed., Aspatore Books from West, Legal, I authored a chapter in the soon to be released book (Jan. 2012), Defending DUI Vehicular Homicide Cases, 2nd Ed. This book is part of a series from "Inside the Minds", which is published by Thompson West. The chapter I authored was an overview of the investigation, discovery and trial phases of a typical DUI Homicide/Manslaughter case. The purpose of the chapter was to give practitioners insight into the defense of these complex cases as well as to provide practical tools to assist the lawyer with the defense of his client. The tools provided include actual motions filed in previous DUI manslaughter cases, which include caselaw, and address motions to suppress, motions in limine and motions dealing with search warrants. A great deal of case law and detail is provided in this chapter, 2012
