Attorney Profile

Since joining Berman & Simmons in 1981, attorney Julian L. Sweet has helped establish the law firm as one of Maine's top personal injury practices. With a background in social services prior to entering the legal profession, Mr. Sweet has a passion for helping those in need, and he devotes his practice primarily to medical malpractice claims and helping his clients obtain the justice they seek after suffering a debilitating injury or devastating loss at the hands of health care providers.

A 1971 graduate of Bowdoin College, Mr. Sweet obtained his Juris Doctor from Northeastern University School of Law in 1980 and his license to practice from the Maine State Bar Association the following year. He is also licensed to practice in Massachusetts and before the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Widely regarded as a leader in his field, Mr. Sweet has achieved considerable success securing some of the largest verdicts and settlements ever awarded in Maine for medical malpractice cases. Through his efforts, he has helped transform the way health care providers and hospitals respond to issues regarding the care they provide while holding them accountable for failing to adhere to the proper standard of care.

As evidence of his impeccable professionalism and exceptional legal abilities, Mr. Sweet has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He holds a perfect 10 out of 10 rating from AVVO and is AV-Preeminent peer-review rated* through Martindale-Hubbell. In addition, Benchmark Litigation named him a litigation star, and Chambers & Partners USA listed him among the top litigators in the state for plaintiff medical malpractice and insurance representation.

Highly active in his legal profession, Mr. Sweet is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Maine Trial Lawyers Association and the Academy of Catastrophic Injury Attorneys, among others.
