Kevin Docherty is a partner at Brown, Goldstein & Levy where he helps lead the firm’s commercial litigation practice. For more than 40 years, BGL has represented every kind of business, from small, closely held companies to Fortune 500 companies in every kind of case, from real estate disputes to alleged securities fraud to fights among business partners. While BGL prides itself on being able to take any case to trial, it also works with clients to avoid litigation, when possible. BGL’s collaborative approach has secured multi-million-dollar victories on behalf of individuals, corporations, and nonprofits. Twenty-three lawyers strong, BGL is proudly based in Baltimore, Maryland.
Since joining Brown Goldstein & Levy in 2013, Kevin has tried cases to verdict in state and federal court and has represented clients in contested hearings before administrative agencies. Kevin has also argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Kevin is an Associate Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an invitation-only trial lawyer honorary society established to reflect the new face of the American bar. Membership is limited to less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers. Kevin was listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Commercial Litigation and Personal Injury Litigation (Plaintiffs) for 2023 and 2024. He was previously named to The Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch list for 2022 and 2021. In 2023, Kevin was selected to Lawdragon‘s inaugural 500 X – The Next Generation guide, which recognizes attorneys who will define the direction of the legal profession moving forward. He was also listed by Lawdragon as one of the United States’ leading 500 litigators for 2023 and 2024, as well as one of the country’s leading 500 plaintiffs’ employment and civil rights lawyers for 2022 and 2023. Additionally, Kevin has been chosen annually for inclusion in the Super Lawyers’ Maryland Rising Stars list each year since 2017. Selection to this list is an honor reserved for attorneys who exhibit excellence in practice and are either 40 years old or younger or have been in practice for ten years or less. Only 2.5 percent of lawyers in Maryland are named to the Rising Stars list each year.
Kevin sits on the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He is also an active member of the legal community in Maryland. Since 2015, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. As part of his ongoing work to ensure dignity and equity for all, Kevin has served on the Board of Directors of the Homeless Persons Representation Project, Inc. since 2019.
Prior to joining the firm, Kevin clerked for the Honorable William M. Nickerson on the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
Before attending law school, Kevin taught middle school social studies in the Baltimore City Public School System.
