Lucas started his career as a litigator, representing a construction contractor in defense of claims of defective construction. More than 20 years later, representing companies in the construction industry is still a passion. While litigating in the courtroom is still where Lucas feels at home, he gets the most satisfaction from assisting clients with their business and resolving disputes well before litigation is necessary. Lucas builds trust and relationships with his clients by providing advice and guidance through difficult times. Litigation is in many ways about problem solving, and Lucas finds it very rewarding to help his clients find solutions to their problems.
Lucas primarily assists clients involved in construction projects, whether for a private job or a federal, state, local government or board of education agency. Through every step of a project, Lucas provides valuable insights and guidance to his clients; from proposal/bid preparation, contract negotiation, bid protests, procurement activities, performance issues, change orders, claims, warranty issues, insurance coverage questions, payment disputes, and terminations up to and through final payment.
A seasoned trial litigator, Lucas has experience at all levels of state courts, primarily circuit court/superior court, within Maryland, D.C. and Virginia, as well as the Federal District Courts for each. He also has appellate experience in the state courts of Maryland and the District of Columbia, as well as the 4th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals.
In addition to the courtroom, Lucas routinely epresents clients in private arbitration proceedings. He also participates as an advocate in mediation sessions, which he strongly feels is an excellent alternative dispute resolution method that should be considered in all cases.
